Online Learning Trends: Microlearning

Online Learning Trends: Microlearning

Today’s talent developers have a wide range of resources to address the needs of a multigenerational workforce. The learning challenges caused by the recent pandemic have created an even greater dependence on online learning solutions.

According to LinkedIn Learning, the top three online learning trends include the following:

  • Microlearning – 49% of talents developers as an area of focus
  • Just in Time Learning (46%)
  • Employee Experience with Engagement Content (46%)

Microlearning

49% of talent developers stated microlearning was the primary area of focus this year. Microlearning is focused on specific skill development and delivered in quick, short increments to aid in attention span and recall. Today’s professional is expected to do more with less and efficiency has become a currency. The modern learner is bombarded with information and distracted by a variety of things vying for their attention on a daily basis. Needless to say, attention spans are at an all-time low. Microlearning is quick and easily digestible. It requires little effort from the learner and allows them to be in control of how they learn. Let’s review the latest research that reflects the importance of microlearning:

  • 4.8 minutes per day – the average employee only has time to devote 1% of their working week to development (Deloitte).
  • 75% – The number of today’s tech-savvy employees that are more likely to watch a video than to read emails, documents, or web articles (Forrester).
  • 60 seconds – one minute of video content was fount to be equal to about 1.8 million written words for training retention (Forrester).
  • 17% – Learning in bite-sized pieces makes the transfer of learning from the classroom to the desk 17% more efficient (Journal of Applied Psychology).
